I think it's great to find free software on the Internet, and especially when it's stuff you can rely on. VLC seems to be pretty famous so i decided to try it out. It doesn't have the sparky interface of Quicktime, but I found it great because it reads most formats. You don't need to waist time searching for codecs on the net. I also like having a list of videos you've just viewed, it makes it easy to go back to something you liked. Also, you can pretty much customize how you listen to music or watch a video.

Best:

Free, reads all formats, really easy to use

Worst:

Simple interface, a lack of image quality for some formats
