corrections:
+ play list is viewed by clicking on VIEW > PLAYLIST
+ visualizations are available via AUDIO > VISUALIZATIONS

Although the playlist is quirky (or perhaps buggy), and there are only a few visualizations, the features are indeed there.

Worst:

in order to make preference changes take effect, it seems necessary to close & then re-open vlc.
